THE FRIAS // PAM LEARNING HUB
A design proposal for a medium-scale PAM Learning Hub. It will be 3-4 stories, with semi-basement parking, open and covered plazas accessible to the public, and be a positive example of tropical architecture in Kuala Lumpur.
The Site - Located in the suburb of Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. The proposed site was currently occupied by APW Bangsar, a creative space for the community. The plot of land was having a total area of 6033 sqm while after the setback, the proposed land was having a 4748 sqm buildable area. Lot 294 were located right beside Balai Berita, NSTP, and Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) Centre, while there is a TNB substation located next to the proposed site. Across the proposed site, there was an ongoing construction site opposite Jalan Riong while a student hostel for UNIKL opposite Jalan Tanduk.
Site Analysis
Proposal site - Lot 294 located in the suburb of Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, Lot 294 is a plot of land situated in Bangsar that was currently occupied by APW Bangsar, a creative space for the community. The plot of land was having a total area of 6033.37Sq.m while after the setback, the proposed land was havinga 4748.98Sq.m buildable area. Accordingto the local authority - DBKL, the proposed site was given a plot ratio of 1: 4 which approximately 18995.92Sq.mwere able to be built on this lot. Lot 294 were located right beside Balai Berita, NSTP, and Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) Centre, while there is a TNB substation located next to the proposed site. Across the proposed site, there was an ongoing construction site opposite Jalan Riong while a student hostel for UNIKL opposite Jalan Tanduk. Plenty of green patches were found surrounding the proposed site, while lots of greeneries were available around the proposed site too.
Precedent Study
Austin Central Library located in downtown Austin, Texas, and overlooking Shoal Creek and Lady Bird Lake. The library was planned according to the context of its site. The design intention was to optimize the energy and water conservation model for building in the region. Austin Central Library has achieved the most daylit library in the country.
Bloomberg’s European headquarters is respectful of its location in the heart of the City of London, close to the Bank of England, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the church of St. Stephen’s Walbrook. The entire city block acquired for Bloomberg’s European Headquarters is surrounded by buildings of incredible architectural and cultural significance. It was important for the Bloomberg in the heart of London’s square-mile respected its surroundings.
